Sweat beaded on Helen’s forehead. Her eyes were sticky and fought opening. Her brain was still filled with the images from her dream. She clutched her head and tried to ground herself. Her lungs emitted heavy, panting breaths.

The image the dream ended on hovered above her still-closed eyes: Agnes lying beneath her, eyes half-closed, neck strained as her head reached back, mouth open on a cry of ecstasy.

Jolie used to ask Helen, during their flirty texts, if she dreamed about her. It had been the result of her admitting once that she was prone to sex dreams. She always said yes, even if it wasn’t true.

Now that proclivity was coming back to bite her. Sexy dreams about Agnes were not what she needed right now. It only further clouded the “Agnes issue” that was growing more complicated by the day.

Yes, she was growing to trust Agnes, even though she wasn’t sure she should. Veronica warned her daily to tread lightly where Agnes was concerned. She’d throw a fit if she knew Helen had met up with Agnes alone last night.

She was deeply attracted to Agnes, had been since she’d first seen her in the police station lobby. The timing for any attraction was terrible right now, but she couldn’t deny that base emotion grew stronger each day.

Her feelings for Agnes were becoming more complex each time they spoke. Tingles ran up her spine when they had stared into each other’s eyes over ice cream. And prickles of intense desire hit her when they touched.

Helen pulled herself into a sitting position, shoved a pillow behind her back, and reached for her phone on the nightstand. She needed advice, and she needed it now. Fortunately, her favorite shoulder was an early riser.

“Hi, punkin.” The sound of Malcolm’s heavy breath indicated he was on his morning run. “You have an early surgery?”

Helen had been known to call him on her way to work. If she had to be there early, he was on his run, later he was usually driving to see about a dog. Tears welled up in her eyes. “No. They gave me a few days off.”

A long pause followed. Helen suspected Malcolm understood the significance of her statement. A surgeon being given a few days off usually meant a mistake had been made or a medical review was happening. It was never good. “What happened?” he finally asked.

“Nothing in particular,” she said, repeating James’s words when he called late the night before to tell her the hospital wanted her to take some administrative leave. “They just think I’m too stressed out. James is going to handle my patient load.”

Malcolm’s heavy breaths filled the air for a few long moments. Helen knew he was deciding whether or not to probe her vague reply further. In the end, he gave her a break. “So why are you up so early? You should be sleeping in.”

“I need your advice on something.”

Malcolm laughed, the sound rich and light in her ears. “There are only two things you ever ask me advice on.
